Asst. Dr. Marija Gjorgoska received the Mojca Senčar Foundation Award – a foundation supporting research in breast and gynecologic cancers – for the best presentation at the 2nd Oncology Research Symposium organized by the Oncology Institute, Ljubljana.
At this prestigious symposium, where researchers from Slovenia and abroad presented their work, Dr. Gjorgoska introduced new non-invasive machine learning diagnostic models based on serum steroid profiles and tumor biomarkers for differentiating ovarian cancer from non-malignant adnexal masses.
The biomarker discovery study was conducted at the Laboratory for Translational Molecular Endocrinology, Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Tea Lanišnik Rižner, in collaboration with the Gynecology Clinic, University Medical Centre Ljubljana. The presented diagnostic models demonstrate promising potential; however, further validation on larger and independent cohorts is required to confirm their clinical applicability. The findings of the study were published in the prestigious journal Cancer Cell International (doi: 10.1186/s12935-025-04047-8).
